Record medals at WAIPBOP Road Race Champs

St Peter's had a record number of entries (25) and medals (12) at the WaiBOP Schools Road Race Championships at Paterangi School this week. For some, this was their first taste of school road racing.

The riders were greeted to a super fresh start but were extremely thankful for the blue day after the last eight years of torrential rain on race day.

The year 7 and 8s kick started the competition with one lap of the 10km circuit. Kane Foster won the Year 8 boys and Payton Hazlehurst the Year 8 girls. Millie Wright finished strongly with a 3rd place in the Year 7 girls after crashing in training the day before.

In the U14 boys, we had Frankie Wright take the win and Isaac Pamment pick up his first cycling medal with an impressive bronze. Paul Rettkowicz outsprinted the rest of the U15 boys for a convincing win also.

Jess Carswell placed second in the girls U15 race and Sophie de Vries 3rd in the hotly contested U16 girls.

In the final races of the day, we saw the U16 and U17 boys light it up over three laps. Oliver Watson-Palmer placed 2nd in the U16 boys and we managed the clean sweep in the U17 boys, with Jacob Spring, Alex Brackenbury, and Hamish Coltman sprinting in for 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

A huge thank you to Megan Glenn, Julie Foster, Lana Hazlehurst, Gordon Rettkowicz and Merv Johnston who came out to support our team and help get our riders to the line race ready!
