Battle of the Schools - Year 7 & 8 Track Cycling

Congratulations to St Peter's Red Team who won the Battle of the Schools event! There were 28 teams from local schools competing for glory at the event on Saturday, 1st December.

With the rain driving hard outside the cyclists were sweating up a storm in perfect conditions inside the velodrome.

Our first team up for the day was Nicole Sherwin, Hannah Lally, James McGuire, and Flynn Underwood. All new to track cycling, these riders did themselves proud by making it through three rounds of Italian Pursuits to win the silver medal in the 'non accredited' section.

In the 'accredited' competition the St Peter’s Red Team (Jess Carswell, Paul Rettkowicz, Kane Foster and Frankie Wright) set a blistering time of 1:15 for four laps of the Avantidrome to qualify fastest, while the White Team (Peter Bennett, Sam Smyth, Maddox Smythe, Isaac Pamment and Gus Challis) qualified strongly in fourth and the Blue Team (Payton Ellis, Scott Assen, James Loughnane, and Stirling Jarnell) had an outstanding ride to qualify 6th.

The second round saw St Peter’s Red v's St Peters White. The Red Teams' experience proved too strong for the White Team. Progressing through to the gold medal ride off, St Peter’s Red Teams' skill and speed outshone Cambridge Middle School for the overall title.

The White Team also rode off against a Cambridge Middle School team in the bronze medal race. With the closest finish of the day, the White Team had to settle for fourth after a photo finish.

The St Peter’s Blue Team raced with determination and proud school spirit to finish 5th overall after two well-executed rounds.

We would like to thank all the families who came along and supported our teams on the day and special thanks to Lewis Johnston (Year 9) for helping out along with Jody, Greg, and Wade.
